Why is the message of Galatians still relevant for Christians today?
The message remains relevant because much of Christendom is saturated with legalism, making it hard for people to break away. Human nature, like Paul's former Judaism, becomes ingrained with religious tradition and legalism. Galatians therefore still declares that believers are not under law but under grace—total freedom and liberty.
Les teaches that Galatians was written with this in view: you are not under law, you are under grace. He says it is still appropriate today because most of Christendom is so saturated with legalism that it is hard for people to break away. He illustrates this by noting that people tongue-in-cheek asked why the Lord took three years to show Paul all the things of grace at that retreat in Arabia; he replied it probably took three and a half years to get Judaism out of him. Human nature, when brainwashed with religion and tradition even as Paul was in Judaism, becomes ingrained with legalism of one sort or another. Therefore the little letter is just as appropriate today as when it was written, and grace means total freedom, total liberty.
