What was the Greek and Roman schoolmaster required to do for the father?

The Greek and Roman schoolmaster, a hired slave or servant, was required by the father to raise, tutor, and teach the child until a designated future point, then report that the young man was ready to work with the father in his business, fully tutored and prepared.

Les explains that the schoolmaster Paul refers to is not from the Jewish economy but from Greek and Roman practice. The Greeks and Romans would hire a slave, a servant, who was instructed and placed under the father's demands. His task was to raise, tutor, and teach the child until some designated point in the future—whether age 16, 18, or what today might be 21. At that point the tutor could tell the master that the young man was now ready to come and work with him in his business, having everything he needed to know, well tutored and well prepared.
