Les Feldick Bible Study

If the covenant is weak and beggarly from man's standpoint, can anyone cancel or add to it once it is confirmed?

No. Once a covenant is confirmed, no one can disannul it, cancel it, or add to it. Scripture presents every covenant as a one-way street: it begins and ends with God, and men cannot touch, enlarge, or subtract from it. Even from man's standpoint, when the Law was weak and beggarly, the confirmed covenant remained untouchable.

Les teaches that the apostle is speaking after the manner of men, using a human analogy. Though it is but a man's covenant, once it is confirmed, no man disannulleth, cancels, or adds thereto. The same truth applies to Scripture's covenants: every covenant in Scripture is a one-way street, beginning and ending with God, and men cannot touch it, enlarge on it, or subtract from it. From the human standpoint the Law was weak and beggarly and could not get the job done; all it could do was point the finger of condemnation at mankind. People are shocked because we normally think of the Law as perfect, holy, and righteous, and it is. Yet even though it was powerless from man's standpoint, if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth or addeth thereto.

Galatians 3:15

Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
