What did the stoned and hanged rebel in the Old Testament picture?

The stoned and hanged rebel pictured Christ, who was hanged on a tree as accursed of God. That public spectacle was a preview of what Christ accomplished in our behalf, for God made Him to be sin for us. It pointed forward to the cross and His finished work.

Les teaches that the Old Testament instruction required a hanged body not to remain all night but to be buried that day, because one hanged on a tree is accursed of God and the land must not be defiled. He connects this to Israel rushing to remove the body by sundown. The rebel had been stoned to death and then hanged on a tree for a public spectacle. Les explains that all of this was a preview of the One who was to come, pointing to II Corinthians 5:21, where God hath made him to be sin for us, and to salvation based on the finished work of the cross plus nothing.

Deuteronomy 21:22
