What does it mean that the cherub was anointed?

The anointed cherub was an angelic being, and cherubs in Scripture are angelic beings. To be anointed meant he held a place of special responsibility among the angelic host. The context describes him as the anointed cherub that covereth, indicating a divinely assigned role and elevated position.

Les explains from Ezekiel 28 that this personality had been in Eden, and the beautiful gemstones—sardis, topaz, diamond, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphire, emerald, carbuncle, and gold—were part of his makeup or outward appearance. Verse 14 calls him “the anointed cherub.” Les points out that cherubs in Scripture are angelic beings, so God is speaking to an angelic being. His anointing means he had a place of special responsibility among the angelic host, and the verse further identifies him as the anointed cherub that covereth. This describes a high, God-given position, not an ordinary one.

Ezekiel 28:14

Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
