How do believers guard against adding works to salvation?
They guard by constantly staying in the Word, affirming that salvation is by grace and faith plus nothing. When doubts arise or Satan suggests they must do this or that, they reject such additions, remembering the Judaizers' error and that Christ's finished work accomplished salvation.
Les teaches that Galatians constantly shows the difference between law and grace. The Judaizers were saying you cannot be saved by grace alone; you must keep the law and circumcision. Les explains that this is not merely a past issue, because other insidious things creep into believers' lives and cause them to doubt. He illustrates this with his grandson asking, “Have I believed enough?” Once doubt enters, Satan suggests, “Maybe I do have to do this, maybe I do have to do that.” The remedy is to constantly stay in the Word, knowing it is true that salvation is by grace and faith, plus nothing.
