What did sin do with the commandments in Paul's experience?

Sin, the old sin nature, took occasion by the commandments and wrought in Paul all manner of contraptions, getting his mind broiling. The Law revealed and condemned sin, but sin used the commandment as an occasion to stir up lust.

Les explains that Romans 7 is tough, like an eighth-grade arithmetic story problem that boggles the mind until it suddenly comes out. Paul asks whether the Law is sin and answers, "Banish the thought." The Law revealed his old sin nature; he would not have known lust except the Law said, "Thou shalt not." The Law condemned this religious Jew who thought he was keeping it. But sin, his old sin nature, taking occasion by the commandments, wrought in him all manner of contraptions—it got his mind just broiling.

Romans 7:8
