Why do people still hold on to legalism and the commandments?
People hold to legalism and the commandments because much preaching and teaching remains in the pre-Cross era, failing to recognize that the Cross completely finished the Law. The Lord nailed the handwriting of ordinances, including the Ten, to the Cross, ending their binding power, though believers still live under the Ten’s moral code.
Les explains that the reason people can hang on to legalism and all the strings in the commandments is that so much preaching and teaching stays in the area before the Cross. They are not recognizing that the Cross completely finished it. The handwriting of ordinances was against us and contrary to us, because human nature was always bumping them. Christ took it out of the way by nailing it to His Cross, including the Ten. The Cross was the end of the Law, so we are not under their binding power. Yet Les insists we are still under the moral code of the Ten, which has a valid role in Christian experience but is not a religious dogma.
