Why do people today struggle to leave legalism for grace?

People struggle to leave legalism for grace because they are steeped in legalistic tradition, much as Peter was steeped in Judaism. That deeply ingrained mindset makes the transition extremely difficult, like pulling teeth, and many resist it tooth and nail rather than step into the glory of God's grace.

Les teaches that Peter had trouble understanding Paul's writings because he was steeped in Judaism and legalism. Even thirty years later, Peter still had problems, though he had to agree that Paul was on the right track. Les explains that this is the same difficulty people face today: it is like pulling teeth to see someone come out from under legalism and step into the glory of God's grace. They almost fight it tooth and nail, and Peter was no different.
