What did Saul have to do to get right with God?

Saul did absolutely nothing to get right with God. On the road to Damascus, the Lord called him by grace, rather than by anything Saul did. Like Israel at the Red Sea, he was helpless and called out, 'What would you have me to do?'

Les explains that Saul’s getting right with God was not a matter of human effort but of grace. Before Damascus, Saul was trying to stamp out anyone in Israel who proclaimed Christ as Messiah and had become separated from mainstream Judaism. He had gone to the chief rulers, who had enough clout with Rome to extradite Jews from Damascus for trial, punishment, and often death. On the road to Damascus, with a heart of absolute hatred for anything contrary to Judaism, he was going to arrest believers in Christ. Yet the Lord called him by grace. If ever a man did not deserve what God did for him, it was Saul. Contrary to what most people think they must do to get right with God, Saul, like Israel at the Red Sea, did absolutely nothing; he helplessly called out, 'What would you have me to do?'
