Stephen proclaimed to Israel's leaders that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah of Israel. He traced Israel's history up to Christ's crucifixion and rejection, declaring the same message Christ and Peter had given: the crucified one was still Israel's Messiah and King.

Peter had said that they killed Him, but God raised Him from the dead, and He was still in a position to be their King. The leaders responded by crying out, stopping their ears, running upon him with one accord, casting him out of the city, and stoning him.
