What is apostasy according to the Bible?

According to Scripture, apostasy is turning the back on the revealed truth of Scripture. It is not about the apostles; rather, it is departing from the revealed truths of Scripture. The context warns that adulterating or perverting the true gospel places one in danger of being accursed.

Les teaches that apostasy is a terrible thing, and most people do not even know what apostasy means. He clarifies that apostasy has nothing to do with the apostles; rather, apostasy is turning the back on the revealed truth of Scripture, turning our back on the revealed truths of Scripture. In the surrounding passage, Paul writes by inspiration of the Spirit and repeats the warning that if anyone—even an angel from heaven—preaches any other gospel than what was received, let him be accursed. Les notes Paul was not speaking out of meanness or envy of another minister; the Spirit emphasizes that adulterating and perverting the true gospel puts a person in danger of being accursed. Repetition in Scripture is there to get our attention.
