How bad was crucifixion compared to other forms of execution?

Crucifixion was not an ordinary death; it was the most horrible death ever devised, the death of the cross. It stands as the bedrock of salvation, a work so simple to believe yet so complex that humans cannot fully comprehend its power.

Les explains that Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient unto death—not just an ordinary death, but the most horrible death ever devised, the death of the cross. That cross becomes the bedrock of our salvation. Les points out that it is so simple that people stumble over it, yet so complex that even if he lived a thousand years he could never comprehend it. He says it is impossible for humans to comprehend the power of the work of the cross. All God asks is that we believe it, and the world refuses to do so.

Philippians 2:8

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
