How did Jews stone someone to death, and what did the corpse look like?
Jewish stoning involved rocks so large that two hands were needed to smash them down on the victim. The repeated blows pummeled the body until the corpse was obscene—disfigured, beaten, and horrifying to look upon. This method was even worse than the 39 lashes.
Les explains that stoning was even worse than the whipping, which most men could not endure up to 39 times; often the whipper had to stop at maybe 25 or 30. He recounts reading a biography on the Apostle Paul describing how, when the Jews stoned someone to death, the corpse was obscene. They used rocks so big it took two hands to smash them down on the victim, and by the time they finished, the person had been literally pummeled into an obscene condition. The Apostle Paul went through that suffering, a reminder of what he endured so we could have our New Testament.
