Why does Paul mention the men picking up the offering in 2 Corinthians 8:16-24?
Paul mentions the men picking up the offering to show the need for integrity in handling God’s affairs. Their presence assured the Corinthians that the collection would be handled honestly, so giving remained voluntary according to one’s ability, not because of pressure or obligation.
Les explains that Paul did not want anyone, wealthy or poor, to feel obligated to give because of his presence. Giving begins with a willing mind and is accepted according to what a person has, not what they lack. Then Paul comes down through verses 16–24 speaking of the men who would come along to pick up these offerings, and Les says this again shows the need for integrity in handling the affairs of God.
But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.
