What does it mean that we are ambassadors for Christ in 2 Corinthians 5:20?
Ambassadors for Christ are representatives of heaven itself, speaking as though God were beseeching people through them. Their commission is to tell the world that Christ has already reconciled them unto Himself and to pray, in Christ, that people be reconciled to God.
Les teaches that verse 20 presents believers as ambassadors and representatives of heaven itself. The appeal is God beseeching people through them: “we pray you in Christ that be ye reconciled to God.” He connects this to verse 21, where God made Christ to be sin for us, taking on the sin of the world so that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Les emphasizes the marvel of the commission and the opportunity to tell the world that Christ has already reconciled them unto Himself, urging people to believe it.
Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
