What changes happen to every believer when they become a new person?
Every believer experiences a change of appetites, lifestyle, behavior, and attitude because they are a new person and a creative work of God. Old things pass away, including old appetites, and life becomes new and different, though this does not make them sinless.
Les explains that every believer suddenly has a change of appetites, a change of lifestyle, a change in behavior, and a change in attitude because they are a new person, different from what they were. This does not put a halo around their head or make them sinless; rather, they are the result of a creative work of a Creator God and have a whole new concept in life. He illustrates this with a young man his same age who spent every Saturday night in the tavern and bar. When the man asked why he never saw Les in the bar on Saturday night, Les answered that he did not see him in church on Sunday morning. Their lifestyles and appetites are totally different, as different as daylight and dark. Les therefore questions professing Christians who see nothing wrong with doing everything the world does, saying there must be a change in attitude and behavior. If there is no change, he doubts anything happened, because if we are the work of a creative act of God, old things pass away—those old appetites—and everything becomes new and different. He looks for that change in lifestyle before saying someone was led to Christ or brought to a knowledge of salvation; when the change is genuine, he rejoices that the person has come to know the Lord and has experienced being born again.
