Where does the Gospel come out in Scripture?
The Gospel comes out in Scripture where Paul comes on the scene, not in the earlier records of Christ's miracles, crucifixion, or resurrection. Paul declares that Christ commended His love toward us while we were yet sinners, and died for us, giving Himself for us. This is the preaching of the cross.
Les teaches that the miracles, crucifixion, and resurrection accounts are good to know, but they are not the Gospel. The Gospel comes out where Paul comes on the scene and says Christ commended His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us and gave Himself for us. That is the preaching of the cross. Les explains this is why Paul stresses in verse 16 that though we have known Christ after the flesh, henceforth we know Him no more. Les suggests Paul and Jesus were almost identical in age, and as Saul of Tarsus, a key Sanhedrin Pharisee, Paul heard of Jesus' miracles and was infuriated as more Jews followed the Messiah from Nazareth, defending his religion and then his apostleship.
