Les Feldick Bible Study

How many men of war were counted among the Israelites, and what does that imply about the total population?

The counted men of war among the Israelites were over 600,000. Because those were young, unmarried men, adding their relatives and families yields easily about five million people, and the overall total is reasonably estimated at three to seven million.

Les teaches that the people were all counted, and from those numbers he arrives at a total of anywhere from three to seven million Israelites. He points out that all together there were over 600,000 men of war, described as young, unmarried men. Once their relatives and families are computed, the population easily reaches five million. He compares this to the Dallas–Fort Worth area, which had only a little over three million, and says most people picture only a few hundred or thousand, but there were millions, which itself is miraculous.
