Why did Mary Magdalene think Jesus was the gardener?

She assumed He was the gardener because she did not recognize Jesus in the pre-dawn semi-darkness. His appearance was very human and ordinary, and her last memory of Him was the awful, disfigured sight on the cross, so she did not connect this man with Jesus.

Les teaches that Mary saw a man standing there and did not know it was Jesus, so she assumed it was the gardener. In the account, she turned and saw Jesus standing but knew not that it was Jesus; He asked why she wept and whom she sought, and she supposed Him to be the gardener. Les points out that a gardener does not look like a ghost or fog but is very human and ordinary. Jesus was likely standing in the pre-dawn semi-darkness. Mary’s last view of Jesus had been on the cross, an awful, disfigured sight—Isaiah says no man was ever so disfigured. In that dim light she saw a normal human being and thought He was the gardener.

John 20:14

And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

John 20:15

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

How did Mary know it was Jesus at the tomb when she didn't recognize Him?

Mary recognized the risen Jesus the moment He spoke her name because she had heard Him call her 'Mary' many times during His earthly ministry, so she knew who He was by His voice even though she could not recognize Him by sight.
