What do some Calvinists believe about the extent of Christ's redemption?

Some Calvinists maintain that Christ's redemption was only for those who would believe it. This view limits the extent of the atonement, whereas Scripture says He is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only but for the whole world.

Les explains that the word 'propitiation' appears in Romans and again in 1 John 2:2. In 1 John 2:2, Christ is the propitiation for our sins as believers, but not for ours only—He is the propitiation for the whole world. Les says this is where he is not a dyed-in-the-wool Calvinist, because a lot of Calvinists maintain that His redemption was only for those who would believe it. So some Calvinists limit the extent of Christ's redemption to believers, while the context presents it as reaching the whole world.
