Should Christians practice foot washing today?
Christians are not required to practice foot washing today. Although some believers do so because it is in the Bible, the context shows it relates to God's dealing with Israel and is not necessarily instructed for the church. It illustrates cleansing, but it is not a mandatory church practice.
Les explains that some believers still practice foot washing today, and he does not condemn them for it. However, he feels they are bringing something from God's dealing with Israel into the church, which is not necessarily instructed for the church. In John 13, at the last Passover, Jesus rose from supper, laid aside His garments, took a towel, girded Himself, poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, wiping them with the towel. Peter objected, asking, "Lord, dost thou wash my feet?" This ties back to the laver of cleansing where priests washed hands and feet after sacrifice, not a whole bath, since they had already bathed before their priestly ministry. The cleansing aspect is a Scriptural lesson, but foot washing is not commanded for the church.
