What did Jesus say is the first and greatest commandment?

Jesus said the first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. He called this the first and great commandment, and said the second is like it: love thy neighbor as thyself.

Les explains that in Matthew 22 a lawyer tested Jesus by asking which is the great commandment in the law. Jesus answered by quoting the command to love the Lord thy God with all the heart, soul, and mind, calling it the first and great commandment. He added the second, to love thy neighbor as thyself, and said all the law and the promise hang on these two. Les notes that Jesus was not merely repeating the Ten Commandments; the first command reflects the first five commandments and God's approach to us, leading us to love Him.
