What is the third commandment in verse 7?

The third commandment in verse 7 forbids taking the name of the Lord thy God in vain. It declares that the Lord will not hold him guiltless who taketh His name in vain. This command is attached to the Lord thy God, as are the first five commandments.

Les explains that verse 7 contains the third command: "Thou shalt not take the name...of the Lord thy God." He points out that the phrase "the Lord thy God" is attached to every one of the first five commandments. The verse also adds the warning that the Lord will not hold him guiltless who taketh His name in vain. After this, the context moves to the fourth command about remembering the Sabbath day to keep it holy, with verse 9 also part of that commandment.

Exodus 20:7

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
