What was Israel's Old Testament calling toward the Gentiles?

Israel's Old Testament calling was to function as priests of God, with every Jew able to bring the Gentiles to a knowledge of their Jehovah God. The nation missed that calling, yet God did not abandon His purpose; He turned to the Gentiles through a different format, raising up Saul of Tarsus as the apostle of the Gentiles.

Les explains that back in the Old Testament, the promise was that Israel, every Jew, could be a priest of God to bring these Gentiles to a knowledge of their Jehovah God. But they missed it. That did not stop God. Instead of taking the whole nation of Israel, God raised up one other little Jew, Saul of Tarsus, a renegade and zealous for the law, and saved him by grace on the road to Damascus. God told Saul, "I'm going to send you far hence to the Gentiles." Saul would go to the Jew too, but he was primarily converted as the apostle of the Gentiles. Israel's stumbling did not mean God was through with His covenant people; rather, through their fall salvation came to the Gentiles under a whole different format.
