Who is Jesus speaking to in Matthew 24 and what question did they ask him?

In Matthew 24, the audience is the twelve disciples, and through them the nation of Israel. They had asked Him what the signs of His coming would be—that is, what Israel should look for at the appearance of her Messiah.

Les explains that the setting for Matthew 24 is Jesus alone with the twelve. In the early verses they ask Him the signs of His coming—what Israel can look for at the appearance of her Messiah. Jesus continues through the chapter speaking to the twelve and beyond them to the nation of Israel; it is not Gentile language. At verse 15 He cites Daniel's abomination of desolation, the Antichrist's defilement of the rebuilt temple, and tells those in Judea to flee to the mountains.

Matthew 24:3

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
