Was Christ smitten more than once?
No. Scripture teaches Christ was smitten for our offenses only once. He went to the cross once and does not go again and again. The Hebrew word over and over is once. Following His resurrection, believers appropriate His work not by another smiting or crucifixion, but by fellowship and speaking with Him in prayer.
Les teaches that Christ first had to suffer and die, and according to the Old Testament term He was smitten for our offenses. The word "smitten" should be kept in mind, because later in Numbers, when Israel murmured for water, Moses struck the rock contrary to God's instruction instead of speaking to it. Les emphasizes, "you don't smite Christ twice." He has been smitten, and the Hebrew word over and over is once. This He did once; He went to the cross once and does not go again and again. After His smiting, He arose victorious over sin and death. Now believers do not appropriate anything by another crucifixion but by fellowship, speaking, and communication. God has given the whole power of prayer so we can speak with Him, praise Him, and petition Him—not through another smiting but by speaking to Him. The context then moves to Exodus 17, where Moses smites the rock, water comes out, and Amalek appears.
By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
