What did Moses do wrong in Numbers when the Israelites complained about water?

When the Israelites complained about having no water, Moses took his rod and struck the rock instead of speaking to it, contrary to God's instruction. This wrong action is contrasted with Christ being smitten only once; believers now fellowship with God by speaking, not by another smiting.

Les explains that in the Numbers account, the children of Israel were murmuring and complaining that they had no water, and Moses had about come to the end of his patience. He took his rod and, contrary to God's instruction, instead of speaking to the rock, he struck it. Les connects this to the truth that you do not smite Christ twice. Christ was smitten for our offenses, but only once; He went to the cross once, not again and again. After His smiting and resurrection, we do not appropriate anything by another crucifixion, but by fellowship, speaking, communication, prayer, praise, and petition.

Numbers 20:11

And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
