What was the collection Paul commanded in 1 Corinthians 16?

The collection was an offering for the saints, specifically the Jerusalem believers. Paul ordered the churches of Galatia to do likewise: on the first day of the week, each believer was to lay by him in store, giving as God had prospered him, not under a mandated ten percent.

Les explains that 1 Corinthians 16:1 concerns the collection of the offering for the saints, the Jerusalem believers, and that Paul had given the same order to the churches of Galatia. He connects the first day of the week with the resurrection day rather than with pagan naming. Les notes that giving is a guideline, as with Abraham giving ten percent to Melchizedek, but it is not to be mandated as law; Paul says to give as the Lord has prospered, led by the Holy Spirit. Paul also says there would be no offerings when he came.

1 Corinthians 16:1

Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
