Was the Sabbath instituted before the Ten Commandments were given?

Yes. The Sabbath was instituted and set up before the Ten Commandments were given, when God mandated that Israel should keep the holy Sabbath on the seventh day. It was later incorporated into the Ten Commandments. Sunday is not the Sabbath, because it is the first day, not the seventh.

Les explains that the Sabbath was instituted and set up before the Ten Commandments were given, when God mandated that Israel should have the holy Sabbath on the seventh day. He acknowledges much confusion today about the Sabbath. He instructed his classes over the last 20 years never to call Sunday the Sabbath, because Sunday is not the Sabbath; it is the first day, not the seventh. As God dealt with Israel, He set up the seventh day as the day of rest, the day of worship, and the holy day, and He would incorporate it into the Ten Commandments. Les also points to the resurrection as the very high point, epitome, and crescendo of all God's dealing with man, and says we have become believers after His resurrection.
