Why did God save us according to Ephesians 2:4?
According to Ephesians 2:4, God saved us because He is rich in mercy and because of His great love with which He loved us. His mercy and love moved Him to act even when we were dead, hopeless, and helpless, quickening us together with Christ—not by works, but by grace through faith.
Les teaches that the pivotal phrase is 'But God.' Paul does not say 'but you' or 'but I'; God alone is the actor. Les compares this to Israel at the Red Sea: they were locked in with nothing they could do, but God opened the sea. In the same way, God saved us not by anything we have done or deserve, but because He is rich in mercy and for His great love. Even when we were dead, hopeless, and helpless, He quickened us together with Christ. Salvation is by grace through faith, not of ourselves—it is the gift of God.
