What was Israel's condition while in Egyptian bondage?

While in Egyptian bondage, Israel was God's covenant people yet spiritually separated from Him, alienated, without an altar, sacrifice, or worship. They were in bondage and lost, requiring God to buy them back and redeem them. They had been totally alienated.

Les explains that Exodus is the book of redemption. Israel was God's covenant people, but because of the sin of the brothers when they sold Joseph into Egypt, they were spiritually separated from God. He lost them. They ended up down in Egypt in bondage, without an altar, without a sacrifice, without a worship, and they had been totally alienated. So God would have to buy them back and redeem them.
