Les Feldick Bible Study

How many men left Egypt when Israel journeyed from Ramesses to Succoth?

Six hundred thousand men on foot journeyed from Ramesses to Succoth, not counting children and women. This figure comes from Exodus 12:37 and describes Israel’s departure from Egypt’s delta region in Goshen. The total company was therefore much larger than the men alone.

Les teaches from Exodus 12:37 that the children of Israel journeyed from Ramesses to Succoth. He identifies Ramesses as being in the delta area of Egypt, up in Goshen. The text says there were six hundred thousand on foot that were men, besides the children and the women. Les therefore treats the 600,000 as the male count only, with the full departing group being far larger. He also recalls earlier estimating three to seven million in the Exodus and later reading a Jerusalem Post article where a rabbi used almost identical figures, about three to five.

Exodus 12:37
