Who wrought us for this selfsame thing, and where did it begin and end?

The one who wrought us is the same One who gave the earnest, the down payment, of the Spirit. It all began with Him, and it will all end with Him; everything is from Him and consummates in Him. This is the believer's hope.

Les explains that the believer's hope is that this body, which is prone to die, is never going to die. Pointing to verse 5, he says the 'he' who wrought us for this selfsame thing is the source and the finish: it all began with Him, and it will all end with Him. This same One has given the earnest, or down payment, of the Spirit. Les notes that the Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle Paul to use the down payment figure because a down payment is only a holding pattern until something later consummates. He then connects this to Ephesians chapter 1, verses 13 and 14, where those in Christ trusted after hearing the word of truth. The emphasis is that the work and future completion are entirely bound up in the One who began it and will end it.

2 Corinthians 5:5

Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
