Was Paul superhuman or was he just like us in his emotions?
Paul was not superhuman. He was just as human as we are, sharing the same passions, appetites, and feelings. He could become heartbroken, distressed, pressed down, and suffering, yet he could also rejoice and be triumphant. His emotions were real and relatable, not beyond ordinary human experience.
Les teaches that Paul was just as human as we are. He had the same passions, appetites, and feelings, and he could get down or rejoicing. In II Corinthians 2, Paul was heartbroken and distressed because Titus had not kept his appointment at Choas, and he had no rest in his spirit. At the same time, the Lord revealed by a vision that he was to go into Macedonia, or Greece, and preach the Gospel. Despite losing track of Titus and not knowing what had happened to him, Paul was obedient to the Lord’s call to cross the Aegean and begin ministry in Macedonia. Les points out the contrast: on the one hand Paul was pressed down, distressed, and suffering, yet he was always triumphant, because God always causes us to triumph. These are tremendous lessons for everyone.
