Whose departed souls and spirits will God bring when Jesus returns?

When Jesus returns, God will bring the departed souls and spirits of believers only, not unbelievers. These believers' souls and spirits come from heaven to the atmosphere, where they will be reunited with their resurrected bodies. This occurs at the Lord's descent, and the dead in Christ rise first.

Les explains that at the resurrection, the body is placed in the grave, but the soul and spirit of the believer is absent from the body and present with the Lord. In I Thessalonians 4, Paul writes that if we believe Jesus died and rose again, God will bring those departed souls and spirits of believers only—not unbelievers—from heaven down to the atmosphere. The Lord Himself will descend with a shout, the voice of the archangel, and the trump of God. The dead in Christ shall rise first: their bodies are brought out of the tomb and reunited with the soul and spirit God has brought from His presence. Living believers will not precede those who have died.

1 Thessalonians 4:14

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
