What does it mean that the first man was earthy?

The first man, Adam, was earthy because he was formed from the earth and belonged to the natural order. He was made of dust, became a living soul, and returned to the earth. Scripture's pattern is first the natural, then the spiritual, with the last Adam, Christ, as the life-giving Spirit.

Les explains that the first man, Adam, was of the earth and earthy; he was made of the earth and went back to the earth. This fits the scriptural rule that the first is natural and then the spiritual. Les illustrates that pattern with Cain then Abel, Ishmael then Isaac, Esau then Jacob, Saul then David, and finally the Antichrist then the true Christ. Paul makes mention of this. The last Adam, Jesus Christ, was made a quickening, or life-giving, Spirit, and He never stopped being God.

1 Corinthians 15:47

The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
