Has our soul and spirit already been redeemed according to Ephesians 1?

Yes, according to Ephesians 1, a believer’s soul and spirit have already been redeemed. However, that redemption is only a down payment, a guarantee that God will complete the transaction and later redeem and give a new body. So the soul and spirit are redeemed now, while the body awaits future redemption.

Les explains that Ephesians 1 speaks of the believer’s soul and spirit as already redeemed, but this is a down payment. God will complete the transaction and redeem and give a new body. The new body is pictured by Christ’s resurrection experience during the 40 days between His coming out of the tomb and His ascension in Acts chapter 1. Les then directs attention to Luke 24:36, where Jesus stood among the ten disciples and said, “Peace be unto you.” He notes one of the fellows is missing, and Jesus’ greeting of peace was needed because His sudden appearance startled them. This resurrection hope is the bulwark of our faith, that Christ died and arose victoriously over sin, death, Satan, and hell, and imparts to us the blessed hope of resurrection.
