What happened in the story Les told about the Evangelical arguing with a Jewish Rabbi about Jesus?
In the anecdote, an Evangelical and an old Jewish Rabbi argued over Jesus' Messiahship. The Evangelical said Jesus had already come, been crucified, returned to glory, and would come again. The Rabbi insisted He had never been there; finally he proposed waiting until He arrives and asking Him, 'Have you been here before?'
Les explains that he read this anecdote in one of the Jewish magazines. An Evangelical and an old Jewish Rabbi were arguing the point as to Jesus' Messiahship. The Evangelical claimed Jesus had already been here, had been crucified, had gone back to glory, and was waiting to come the second time. The Rabbi naturally said, 'Oh no way, He's never been here.' They argued back and forth until the old Rabbi said they would just wait until He gets here and then ask Him, 'Have you been here before?' Les says that sums up the Jewish thinking: He has not yet come. He connects this to the major mentality of most Jews, even today, being like Saul of Tarsus—thinking Jesus was an imposter and blasphemer, and that removing His name from Israel does God a favor. Les also notes that an Orthodox Jewish guide in Israel knew the Gospel accounts better than most but still said he was not a Christian. Many Jews are looking for Messiah soon, but Les warns the one they will receive will be the counterfeit Messiah, the Antichrist, not the true Messiah.
