Which direction did Jonah go when God told him to go to Nineveh?
When God commanded Jonah to go to Nineveh, Jonah went the opposite direction: he took a ship and sailed west. He should have taken a camel and gone east, but he refused. Later God dealt with him, brought him back to shore, and sent him to Nineveh.
Les explains that when God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, Jonah instead took a ship and went west, when he should have taken a camel and gone east. Jonah's reluctance reflected the Jewish mindset that those Gentiles had nothing to do with his God, even though it was his God who told him to go. Eventually God dealt with him, brought him back to shore, and sent him to Nineveh. This illustrates that God can save Gentiles when He wants to.
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
