Les Feldick Bible Study

What does a barley field look like when the early-ripening heads are ready?

A barley field at firstfruits is still green and fully headed out, yet scattered yellow heads of grain appear throughout. These early-ripening heads have ripened before the mass of other stems around them. They stand out in the green field.

Les explains that barley was their first grain to be harvested in the spring of the year. He pictures a little tract of land—10, 12, 15 acres or whatever—where the field is still green and all headed out. Suddenly, scattered throughout that field are yellow heads of grain. These are early-ripening heads that have ripened before the mass of all the other stems around them. They stand out in the green field. The Jews were to go into that green field and pluck those early-ripened stems with the heads, enough to make a sheaf, and bring it to the priest as a wave offering—the firstfruits.
