What do the individual ripened grain stems represent in the spiritual harvest?
They represent individual people within mankind—persons ripe and ready for a spiritual harvest. Gathered out of the larger field, these individuals are few compared to the whole crop, yet they are enough to be gathered together and form a sheaf.
Les explains that the Old Testament grain harvest comes to its fruition in the New Testament, so the scene is a picture not merely of wheat or barley but of a spiritual harvest. The scattered ripened stems are individuals—one here and one there—suddenly ripe while the rest of the crop is still a few days away. The Jew would pluck those ripened stems until he had a multitude and could make a sheaf, then present it to the priest as a wave offering. In the spiritual application, the ripening stems picture individuals gathered out of the whole, few compared to the whole but enough to make a sheaf. Jesus used the same analogy when He told the disciples to look at the fields white unto harvest, and He was speaking of mankind ready for a spiritual harvesting.
