Les Feldick Bible Study

What are the three aspects of the Jewish harvest?

The Jewish harvest had three aspects: first, a sampling of the early ripening heads of grain; second, the main harvest of the field; and third, leaving the corners and gleanings for the poor, as instructed in Leviticus 19. Paul later uses this harvest pattern to illustrate resurrection.

Les teaches that in Leviticus 19, after the main harvest was taken, the Israelites were commanded not to reap the corners of their field or gather the gleanings; those were left for the poor, and they were not to glean the vineyard. He identifies three aspects of the Jewish harvest: the early ripening heads of grain taken as a sampling, the main harvest, and the corners and gleanings left for the poor. Les then connects this process to I Corinthians 15, where Paul says Christ has risen from the dead and has become the first fruits of those who have died. He views this as Paul using Israel's harvest system as an illustration of the resurrections that are coming, while noting that it requires qualification and more time than he has there.

Leviticus 19:9

And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.
