What do you get when someone who cannot play an instrument picks it up?

If a person who cannot play an instrument picks it up, the result is just a bunch of noise. Without knowing how to bring out the right tone at the right time within the score, there is no melody or harmony, only gibberish and noise.

Les explains that unless somebody picks up an instrument who knows how to play it, how to bring out the right tone at the right time within the score, what you have is a bunch of noise. He illustrates with a symphony orchestra: before the curtain, the musicians are tuning their instruments, and it is just gibberish and noise—no melody, no harmony, nothing worth listening to. You can hardly wait until they are ready, the curtain goes up, and you can hear music. Paul says the same thing: even lifeless musical instruments, whether pipe or harp, must give a distinction in the sound—the right note at the right place and right timing—otherwise how shall it be known what is piped or harped? How can you make a melody? How would you know what song they are playing? You don't.

1 Corinthians 14:7

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
