What did the Romans use the trumpet for in battle?

The Romans used the trumpet to sound battle commands, directing soldiers in the same way American cavalry used signals in movies. A clear, certain trumpet signal was necessary so troops could prepare for battle and follow orders, while an uncertain sound left them unable to respond correctly.

Les explains that Paul is using simple illustrations about musical instruments and battle. In verse 8, Paul asks, if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to battle? Les notes the Romans used the trumpet for battle commands, much like American cavalry in movies used signals with their riders. The point is that a distinct, clear sound is necessary so people know what is being communicated and can respond properly.
