What happened when Paul laid his hands on the twelve disciples at Ephesus?

When Paul laid his hands on the twelve disciples at Ephesus, the Holy Spirit came upon them. They spoke in languages other than their own and prophesied. This occurred after they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, having previously received only John's baptism of repentance.

Les explains that at Ephesus Paul found certain disciples who had not even heard that there was a Holy Spirit. They had been baptized only with John's baptism, which Paul described as a baptism of repentance through the nation of Israel. After they heard, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then, when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with languages other than their own and prophesied. Les points out that this was one of only three times in the whole Book of Acts, in fact in all of Scripture, where the Holy Spirit manifested Himself by giving out the gift of speaking a multitude of languages. Those languages were known languages, understandable if someone from that same background happened to be in the room.

Acts 19:5

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 19:6

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Acts 19:7

And all the men were about twelve.
