What divisions existed in the Corinthian church that Paul had to address?

The Corinthian church had divisions over allegiance to different leaders. Some believers said they followed Peter, others claimed Apollos, and still others said they followed Christ. Paul addressed these factions, insisting that such party loyalty was not the way it should be among believers in the Body of Christ.

Les explains that Paul was writing to the Corinthians because the church was still carnal and had not grown spiritually. From chapter 1, one problem was divisions over who they were following: some said they listened to Peter, some to Apollos, and others said they followed Christ. Paul said that was not the way it was supposed to be. Alongside that, Paul also had to deal with believers going to pagan courts against one another, gross immorality in the church, and the tongues phenomena that had become a problem and upset the function of the local church.
