What does it mean that the body is one but has many members?
The one body with many members illustrates the Body of Christ: many individual believers form one unified body. Its Head is Christ in Heaven, the control and nerve center. Every true believer, regardless of spiritual experience, becomes a member by the Holy Spirit baptizing them into that one Body.
Les explains that just as a human body is one yet has many members—fingers, toes, ears, and eyes—so also is the Body of Christ. The control of all those members is in the head, and for the Body of Christ the Head is in Heaven, where the believer’s citizenship and nerve center are. Verse 13 says that by one Spirit all true believers, not just the most spiritual or those who had an emotional upheaval, are baptized into the Body of Christ. Thus every true believer, regardless of location or experience, is a member of that one Body.
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
