What does an evangelist do according to the Bible?
Scripture presents evangelists as those who preach salvation and probably travel from place to place. As one of the three basic gifts given to the Church, their role is to perfect and mature the saints, equip them for the work of ministry, and edify the Body of Christ so believers can become soul winners.
Les explains that evangelists are one of the three basic gifts the Church needs today, alongside pastors and teachers. He says the evangelist is a man who can preach salvation and probably goes from place to place. God gave these gifted people for the perfecting and maturing of the saints, to bring them from infancy, carnality, and milk-bottle feeding up to meat-eating believers, and for the work of the ministry and the edifying of the Body of Christ. The primary purpose of the Church, he maintains, is to feed its members so they can go out and become soul winners in the world, as the early church did.
