Who is able to have and exercise agape love, and why can't the unsaved understand it?

Only the true believer can have and exercise agape love, because it is God-centered, not erotic love. The unsaved world does not know what it is and cannot comprehend it; Paul says it is available for believers to latch on to.

Les explains that the love in this passage is not the erotic love Hollywood promotes, but agape love, which is God-centered. Only the true believer can really have and exercise this kind of love. The unsaved world doesn't know what it is and cannot comprehend it, but for believers, Paul says, this is out there for us to latch on to. Les then walks through love's attributes: love suffers long, is kind, does not envy or covet, does not vaunt itself, is not puffed up, does not behave unseemly, does not seek her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil, does not rejoice in iniquity but rejoices in truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, and never fails. Faith itself is based on love, and the work of the cross displayed God's love when He sent the best heaven had to Calvary, pouring wrath on Christ while shedding His love abroad on the human race. Les also points to Abraham Lincoln as an example of godly love enduring despite ridicule and disrespect.
